A pair of cups created in Vienna, Austria in the early 19th century inspired the FODO pattern. Initially, European porcelain pieces were copied on their far-east eastern model which used patterns for their symbolic meaning. Otherwise, European counterparts eventually used them purely for decorative purposes.
This FODO is a perfect example of this adaptation, depicting oriental characters, exotic birds, dragons and plants on a gold-speckled background. This collection is hand-painted and hand-gilded with 24 K gold.
Elegant and understated, the Apponyi Collection embodies the refined craftsmanship of Herend porcelain. This simpler version of Fleurs des Indes décor was first made for Count Albert Appony at the turn of the century. The exoticism of the Indies remains, overlaid with bourgeois poise.
